Foot Specialist: What Does a Foot Specialist Deal With?

There are many different types of foot specialists. Pedorthists are one of the most specialized, deal with anything that makes the foot move differently or adds pressure areas to the feet. They focus on foot orthotics and shoes, along with a few foot and lower extremity braces. Foot specialists that are otherwise known as chiropodists or podiatrists, deal with a variety of different conditions, adding warts, ingrown toenails, and infections to their repertoires.

People often take their feet for granted and don’t think about them until they hurt! If you think about it, our feet support our entire body and handle an enormous amount of pressure on a daily basis. Problems with our feet can also lead to pain throughout our body in our knees, hips, or lower back as they can throw off the alignment all the way up to the lower back. If we don’t take care of our feet it may cause a lot of pain later in life. So, as you can see, having a foot specialist in your life can be very helpful.

Finding A Foot Specialist

If you are experiencing pain that may be due to a foot condition, you may want to find a foot specialist. To start, speak with your family physician. He or she may have a foot specialist they refer to regularly. Ask co-workers, family and friends if they can recommend someone. Check out the yellow pages for a local foot specialist or look online. The internet can be a great resource as a foot specialist may have a site outlining their services.

Whoever you find, make sure you check out their credentials, insurance and experience. Seeing a foot specialist is a medical service, so your insurance plan may cover part or all of the expenses. Your condition may require the use of custom orthotics, so make sure you check your plan to see if these are covered.

What to do With your Foot Specialist?

After you have found a foot specialist in your area, note your symptoms and make an appointment. Your foot specialist will assess your feet and your gait and will find out what has been causing you pain. Once you start your treatment you will hopefully be on your way to a pain free step!
